Gimmelwald is car-free. No traffic, just cowbells and mountain air. The village sits on a sunny terrace above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, minutes from Mürren by cable car or a downhill walk.
Piz Gloria at 2,970 m. The cable car from the village climbs via Mürren and Birg to the Schilthorn summit, with its revolving restaurant and 360-degree views of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Best on a clear morning.
Trails start at the door. The Northface Trail to Mürren is an easy classic; longer routes drop into the Lauterbrunnen Valley past waterfalls. In winter the same slopes turn to sledging and ski touring terrain.
The valley and beyond. Lauterbrunnen with the Staubbach and Trümmelbach Falls, car-free Mürren and Wengen, Interlaken between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and the Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe, are all within easy reach.
Eat local. Pension Gimmelwald pours drinks a minute away; Mürren has hotel restaurants such as the Eiger Guesthouse; Tham serves Chinese food in the area. Stock up in Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen, the village shop is small.
Pack light and plan the last gondola. Everything arrives by cable car from Stechelberg, so a light bag is a gift to yourself. Note the last ascent of the day, weather changes fast above 2,000 m, and the village is quiet after dark, exactly the point.
